PDRM Seizes RM106 Million in Illegal Fireworks

Federal police report major success in anti-smuggling operations throughout 2025, confiscating over RM106 million worth of banned pyrotechnics including "Mercun Bola".

KUALA LUMPUR - The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) announced today the culmination of a year-long operation targeting illegal fireworks smuggling rings. The operation, dubbed "Op Cahaya", resulted in the seizure of over RM106 million worth of contraband.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali stated that the majority of seizures were made at border checkpoints and unauthorized warehouses in the Klang Valley.

Crackdown on "Mercun Bola"

A significant portion of the seized items included the highly dangerous and prohibited "Mercun Bola". Authorities have reiterated that possession of such items carries a mandatory jail term under the Explosives Act 1957.

"We are sending a clear message: public safety is non-negotiable. While we support the legal trade of approved fireworks for festive joy, we will not tolerate the smuggling of explosives that endanger lives," he added.
